  1. Mr. Rodger Halston, you have a diverse career spanning acting, business, and artistry. Can you share how your journey began and what inspired you to venture into these different fields?

My  journey into acting and the cosmetics industry began with a profound passion for storytelling and self-expression. Growing up, I was captivated by the performing arts, often finding solace and inspiration in classic films and theater. This early exposure ignited my desire to act, leading me to pursue formal training in drama and performance.

As I ventured into Hollywood, I faced the usual challenges of an emerging actor. However, my resilience and commitment to my craft set me apart. I drew inspiration from iconic figures in film and theater, as well as from my own experiences, which fueled my determination to create compelling characters that resonate with audiences.

In parallel to my acting career, I discovered a fascination with beauty and makeup. I observed the transformative power of cosmetics, not just as a means of enhancing physical appearance but as a tool for artistic expression. This realization led me to explore the cosmetics industry, where I sought to carve out a unique niche.

My vision culminated in the creation of a new category in makeup that emphasizes artistry and individuality. I aimed to break away from traditional beauty standards, encouraging people to embrace their unique features and express themselves through bold colors and innovative techniques. My brand reflects a commitment to inclusivity and creativity, offering products that inspire users to see makeup as an art form.

Through my dual pursuits in acting and cosmetics, I have cultivated a dynamic career that celebrates both performance and artistry, inspiring others to explore their own creative journeys.

2. As the Founder and President of Amera Distributors, what are some of the key challenges you face in the beauty industry, and how do you address them to ensure the success of Era Beauty?

ERA Cosmetics
ERA Cosmetics

As the president and founder of Era Beauty, I’ve encountered several key challenges in creating a new cosmetic brand and establishing a unique category within the beauty industry. Here’s how I approached these challenges:

### 1. Market Saturation

Challenge: The beauty industry is highly competitive and saturated with established brands. Standing out and capturing consumer attention can be daunting.

Approach: I focused on identifying gaps in the market and understanding consumer needs that were not being met. By conducting thorough market research and engaging directly with potential customers, I was able to develop a unique value proposition. This included emphasizing our commitment to inclusivity, sustainability, and artistry, which resonated with a diverse audience.

### 2. Brand Identity

Challenge: Creating a strong and distinct brand identity that communicates our mission and values is essential, yet challenging.

Approach: I invested time in defining our brand story and aesthetic. Collaborating with talented artists and influencers helped shape our brand’s voice and visual identity. By consistently reflecting our core values in all marketing materials and product designs, we built a recognizable brand that connects emotionally with consumers.

### 3. Product Development

Challenge: Developing innovative products that meet high standards of quality and efficacy while also being unique can be a complex process.

Approach: I prioritized collaboration with experienced chemists and makeup artists to create products that are not only effective but also push the boundaries of traditional cosmetics. Iterative testing and feedback loops allowed us to refine our products based on real user experiences, ensuring they truly resonate with our target audience.

### 4. Distribution and Retail Partnerships

Challenge: Securing distribution channels and retail partnerships can be a significant hurdle for new brands.

Approach: I focused on building relationships with both online and brick-and-mortar retailers. By presenting a compelling brand story and demonstrating our unique offerings, we were able to secure partnerships that aligned with our vision. Additionally, investing in a robust e-commerce platform allowed us to reach consumers directly and build a loyal customer base.

### 5. Building a Community

Challenge: In the beauty industry, fostering a loyal community around a brand is crucial but can be difficult to achieve.

Approach: I emphasized engagement through social media and community events. By encouraging user-generated content and creating platforms for our customers to share their experiences, we nurtured a sense of belonging. This community-driven approach not only enhanced brand loyalty but also provided invaluable feedback for future product development.

### 6. Sustainability and Ethical Practices

Challenge: Today’s consumers are increasingly concerned about sustainability and ethical practices in beauty products.

Approach: I made sustainability a cornerstone of Era Beauty’s mission. This involved sourcing eco-friendly ingredients, using recyclable packaging, and ensuring ethical production processes. By transparently communicating our efforts, we built trust with our consumers and positioned Era Beauty as a responsible choice in the market.

By addressing these challenges with a strategic and creative mindset, I have been able to navigate the complexities of launching Era Beauty and establish a brand that not only stands out but also contributes meaningfully to the beauty industry.

3. Your acting career includes roles in a variety of genres, from historical dramas like 'David & Goliath' to popular series on Netflix and HBO. What type of roles or genres do you find most fulfilling and why?

As an actor, I resonate deeply with Meryl Streep's quote: “Acting is not about being someone different. It's finding the similarity in what is apparently different, then finding myself in there.” This perspective encapsulates the essence of my journey and the roles I find most fulfilling.

The most rewarding roles challenge me to delve into the nuances of human experience. They inspire my creativity by encouraging me to explore complex emotions and multifaceted characters. Each character, while distinct, often mirrors aspects of my own life, beliefs, and experiences. This connection allows me to bring authenticity to my performances and fosters a deeper understanding of myself. As a performer I love the process of making the project far more than a finished end result.

In my craft, I strive to uncover the shared humanity that exists within every character. Whether portraying a hero, an antagonist, or someone in between, I aim to reveal the universal truths that bind us all. This process not only enriches my performances but also fuels my passion for storytelling.

Through this lens, I view acting as a journey of self-discovery. Each role serves as a mirror, reflecting different facets of my identity and enabling me to grow as an artist and as a person. It’s this exploration—finding the common threads in diverse narratives—that makes acting a profoundly fulfilling endeavor for me.

4. You have a strong connection with Norway, particularly through your work on the Norsk Tipping advertising campaign. Can you tell us more about your experiences in Norway and what you enjoy most about the country?

The reasons I love Norway are numerous and deeply personal. The warmth and kindness of the Norwegian people create an inviting atmosphere that makes you feel at home. Their strong sense of community and pride in their culture is truly inspiring. The honor and respect that Norwegians have for their country—its history, traditions, and natural beauty—further enrich my appreciation for this remarkable place.

Working with Harald Zwart on the Norsk Tipping commercial was a transformative experience that deepened my connection to Norway. Harald's passion for storytelling and his commitment to showcasing Norwegian culture through his work resonated with me. Collaborating with him allowed me to immerse myself in the local artistry and creativity, further elevating my admiration for the country.

I feel incredibly lucky and blessed to have the opportunity to be in Norway. Every moment spent here—whether exploring the stunning landscapes, engaging with the culture, or connecting with the people—reminds me of the beauty of this country and its rich heritage. It’s a place that inspires me both personally and professionally, and I cherish every experience it offers.

5. As a speaker at NIEC2024, what key messages or insights do you plan to share with the audience, particularly regarding your multifaceted career and the intersection of business and the arts?

At the NIEC conference in Norway, I’m excited to share key elements that I believe can inspire everyone to follow their passion and dreams. One of the most important points I’ll emphasize is that the first step is often the hardest, but it’s crucial to take that leap. As I often say, “While you’re sitting there thinking about it, someone else is out there doing it.” This serves as a powerful reminder to take action.

I’ll also share my personal journey, which has been filled with inspiring and motivating moments. From living in a tent for five months to now having a home on the beach in Malibu, my experiences have taught me the importance of resilience and determination. Each challenge I faced was a stepping stone toward realizing my dreams.

I want to encourage everyone to reach for the stars and not let fear hold them back. Embracing uncertainty and pushing through discomfort can lead to incredible opportunities. I believe that with passion, commitment, and the courage to take that first step, anyone can forge their own path and achieve their dreams. I look forward to sharing my story and inspiring others to pursue their aspirations with confidence!

6. Balancing a career in Hollywood with running a successful business must be demanding. How do you manage your time and maintain a balance between these two worlds?

As an artist driven to succeed, I’ve dedicated myself to cultivating both my artistic talents and my business acumen. I believe that a successful career in the arts requires not only creativity but also strategic thinking and adaptability.

One principle that has guided me is the idea that “the more nets you throw in the water, the more fish you will catch.” This metaphor emphasizes the importance of diversification and exploration in both my artistic endeavors and business ventures. By pursuing various projects, collaborations, and opportunities, I’ve been able to expand my reach and discover new avenues for success.

Balancing the creative and business aspects of my career has allowed me to navigate challenges more effectively. It enables me to approach my art with a professional mindset, ensuring that I not only produce meaningful work but also create avenues for it to be recognized and appreciated.

Ultimately, this blend of artistry and entrepreneurship fuels my passion and drives me to continue pushing boundaries, both creatively and commercially. By remaining open to new opportunities and continuously expanding my horizons, I’ve found that success can take many forms, and each step forward is a chance to grow and learn.

7. Your role as King Saul in 'David & Goliath' was quite impactful. How do you prepare for such significant roles, and what do you take away from these experiences?

My preparation for any acting role begins with a deep immersion into the character—understanding who they are and what they represent, whether they are fictional or nonfictional. I believe that to portray a character authentically, I must explore their motivations, background, and emotional landscape.

### Here’s my approach:

1. Research: I dive into the character’s history, context, and relationships. This includes reading scripts thoroughly, studying relevant literature, and exploring the time period or setting in which the character exists.

2. Character Framework: I analyze the character’s framework—what drives them, their fears, desires, and conflicts. This deep understanding helps me connect with their essence and find common ground with my own experiences.

3. Empathy Building: I focus on developing empathy for the character. Understanding their circumstances and feelings allows me to bring authenticity to the performance. I often ask myself how I would react in similar situations.

4. Physicality and Voice: I work on the physicality and voice of the character, experimenting with different gestures, postures, and vocal nuances that reflect their personality.

5. Rehearsal and Exploration: Finally, I engage in rehearsals and improvisation to explore the character in action. This process helps me embody them fully and discover new layers to their personality.

By immersing myself deeply into who they are and the framework of their existence, I aim to create a nuanced and compelling portrayal that resonates with the audience. Each role becomes an opportunity for growth and exploration, making the journey of acting even more fulfilling.

8. Era Beauty emphasizes innovation and quality in its products. Can you discuss some of the latest trends in the beauty industry and how Era Beauty is staying ahead of the curve?

At Era Beauty, staying ahead of emerging trends in the beauty industry is a core part of our mission. We believe in thinking outside the box and challenging conventional rules to drive innovation. Here’s how we approach this:

9. You have worked with major studios like Universal and HBO. How do these experiences influence your approach to business and creativity within Amera Distributors?

As an actor with experience working with major studios like Universal, Paramount, HBO, Netflix, and Fox, I’ve discovered that there are significant overlaps between artistry and business that contribute to success in the industry. Here are some key insights:

### 1. Storytelling as a Core Element

Both artistry and business in the entertainment industry revolve around storytelling. Whether I’m interpreting a character or promoting a project, the ability to tell a compelling story is essential. Understanding the narrative allows me to connect with audiences and stakeholders alike, enhancing the overall impact of any project.

### 2. Collaboration and Teamwork

Success in both acting and the business side of the industry relies heavily on collaboration. Working with directors, producers, and fellow actors fosters an environment where creativity flourishes. This teamwork also extends to marketing and distribution, where aligning visions ensures a cohesive approach to reaching audiences.

### 3. Adapting to Change

The entertainment landscape is constantly evolving, whether through changes in technology, audience preferences, or industry trends. As an actor, I must be adaptable in my performances, while on the business side, being open to new strategies and platforms is crucial. This flexibility allows for innovation and growth.

### 4. Branding and Image

Just as actors cultivate their personal brand, studios and projects must also establish a strong identity. Understanding how to effectively market myself while aligning with the brand of the project enhances visibility and appeal. This synergy between personal and project branding can lead to greater success.

### 5. Networking and Relationships

Building relationships is vital in both realms. Networking with professionals across various sectors opens doors to new opportunities, collaborations, and insights. Nurturing these connections helps foster a supportive community that contributes to mutual success.

### 6. Strategic Planning

Both artistry and business require strategic planning. In acting, this might involve choosing roles that align with my career goals, while in business, it includes developing marketing strategies and understanding audience demographics. A clear vision and plan help navigate the complexities of the industry.

### 7. Balancing Creativity and Commercial Viability

Finding the balance between creative expression and commercial success is essential. While I strive to bring authenticity to my roles, understanding the business aspects—such as audience expectations and market trends—ensures that my work resonates with viewers.

By recognizing and leveraging these overlapping elements, I have found that success in the entertainment industry is not just about talent but also about understanding the intricate relationship between artistry and business. This holistic approach has enriched my career and opened doors to new possibilities.
